Excerpt
The section on Radiological Examination in the WHO drinking-water standards was reviewed by the Working Group to determine what changes, if any, were warranted as a result of the increasing use and generation of radioactive materials for a variety of beneficial purposes and their release to surface waters, and to review the presence of naturally-occurring radionuclides in ground water used as sources of drjnking-water. The Working Group, having regard to the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), suggested that the annual dose equivalent attributable to drinking-water be limited when practicable to no more than 0.05 mSv (Smrem). On this basis, non-action levels were suggested for gross alpha and gross beta activity, which was not to exceed 0.1 Bq/l (approximately 3 pCi/l) and 0.8 Bq/l (approximately 20 pCi/l), respectively. These levels were based upon an adult drinking-water intake of 2 l/d. Levels of activity exceeding these values were to be reported to the appropriate competent authorities, who would determine what action was required.
